More on Reflexology

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY, WHERE DOES IT COME FROM AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

It is estimated that there are over 7,200 nerve endings (‘reflexes’) located in the feet and hands.  Stimulation of these nerve endings sends messages to the brain through the spinal cord.  These messages tell the brain to produce endorphins, which are the body’s own painkillers.  Endorphins create the good feeling and relaxation so vital to health and well being.  Reflexology uses pressure and massage on the hands and feet to work out deposits in the body which allows circulation and energy to flow freely.  This permits the body’s systems, organs and tissues to function optimally and provides newfound energy in the receiver.

Reflexology is not new.  Quite the contrary, it is in fact an ancient healing art that originated in early Egypt and Asia.  If a person was not feeling well, a practitioner would work on both feet and hands.  Evidence of this was discovered in pyramid wall paintings and hieroglyphics of the physicians’ tombs in Egypt (c. 2500 BCE).  In Asia, it has been used in conjunction with acupuncture –yet another ancient healing art.  (Acupuncture has generally been considered to be an outgrowth of China's Neolithic Age, or New Stone Age-- c. 8000-3500 BCE).

Reflexology helps to release stress and tension from the body and is a wonderful way to relax and de-stress.  It reaches all types of acute and chronic cases.  It reduces physical pain levels of the body such as migraines and headaches, back pain, sciatica, knee pain, etc.  It is an excellent tool for pre and post operative surgeries, in alleviating pain caused by hereditary, genetic conditions (e.g. Cystic Fibrosis, Croehn’s Disease/Colitis, Reynaud’s Disease, etc), in helping right away with new/recent injuries, accidents and traumas, in preventing loss of a body part (e.g. preventing a leg having to be removed by ridding the body from gangrene due to diabetes) and may even avert possible death.  It also approaches internal areas at a distance that cannot normally be reached physically by easing issues like diabetes, digestion issues, heart conditions, lung and respiratory problems, liver damage, kidney failure/stones, etc.  It even prevents potential future problems and symptoms from reoccurring that are often related to old, repetitive and overlooked injuries/accidents/traumas.  It is a great measure in preventative care to overall health and well-being and it feels pretty darn good.

Furthermore, Reflexology helps with basic, general problems in the feet and hands on a more physical level.  Foot Reflexology aids in plantar fasciitis, heel fissures, ankle swells and injuries, bunions, shin splints, foot cramps, arch pain, achy feet, and so on.  Hand Reflexology helps to reduce and even end pains such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, tendonitis, neck and shoulder pain, etc.

So to sum it all up in a nut shell, Reflexology basically facilitates recovery time faster by leading the body back into balance and preventing and/or relieving it from further, any and all dis-ease.  It is an organic solution to frustrating pain, stiffness, aches, dis-ease, and other overbearing stressors life sometimes offers.    Results can usually be achieved in at least one or two sessions, depending of course on how well the body responds, how early the symptom is dealt with, on how one’s lifestyle/attitude is.  If it is a severe matter, it is recommended to receive Reflexology often, as soon as the problem happens, when pain arises, when a chronic condition has been reoccurring.
